Besides conducting services at many Post functions, our highly acclaimed Honor Guard is also called upon to participate at numerous funeral ceremonies at Bay Pines National Cemetery every month for our veterans.
Proceeds from fishing tournaments and other special events sponsored by Post 273 help the needs of the children and youth of our community. Post 273 sends several students to Tallahassee for the Boys State program each year. During the week long program they receive instruction on citizenship and experience how their State and Federal governments function. Our Oratorical students often compete in the state wide finals.
Representatives from Post 273 present School Awards and plaques to the top students from 10 local elementary and secondary schools for outstanding scholastic achievement.
Post 273's main focus is to Disabled Veterans confined at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital. Other veteran's needs are also attended to by our Post Service Officer. These services include administrative and financial assistance.
One of the most widely publicized and attended event of the year at Post 273 is the Annual Veteran's Boat Parade in November. Members, guests, and dignitaries from all over the Madeira Beach area and beyond gather at our Post, as do neighbors all along the parade route, to cheer the fifty or so boats participating in the parade.
Other events, sponsored by the Legion, Auxiliary Riders or S.A.L., include golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, Memorial Day service, Patriot's Day service, Fourth of July and St. Patrick's Day celebrations, dinner dances, bus trips, and other travel getaways.
Post 273 has the largest American Legion Family membership in the world. Overlooking the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway in Madeira Beach, Post 273 is proud of its full length patio, Tiki Bar and boat docks. Legionnaires and their families from all over Florida and the world visit our facilities throughout the year to enjoy our hospitality.
As a unit of the Department of Florida and the American Legion National organization, Post 273 holds to the goals of providing "service to our veterans, their families and communities, states and nation."
For information regarding membership, please call or visit our office during the week at the phone number or address listed on our main page, or view the membership requirements and application on this website.
